Colcom Foundation Addresses Overpopulation’s Toll on Natural Resources
While environmental conversations often focus on technology or policy, Colcom Foundation has long argued that population size is a root driver of ecological stress. The Pittsburgh-area private foundation funds work aimed at understanding and reducing the adverse effects of overpopulation on natural resources, a mission it has pursued since its founding nearly three decades ago.
A Foundation Built on Environmental Ethics
Colcom Foundation was established in 1996 by Cordelia S. May, a philanthropist whose concern for the natural world dated back to at least 1952. At that time, still in her early twenties, she began supporting family planning as an expression of her humanitarian values and her recognition that unchecked population growth would eventually overwhelm the planet’s ecosystems. The foundation was substantially funded after her death in 2005.
Colcom Foundation’s work has also facilitated proactive environmental advocacy and protection by groups, including the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, WeConservePA, Westmoreland Land Trust, Protect PT, and Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services.
Today, the foundation’s primary mission is to foster a sustainable environment to ensure quality of life for all Americans by addressing the major causes and consequences of overpopulation. The problems it links to population growth are concrete: habitat destruction, pollution, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem collapse. These are not abstract concerns to Colcom Foundation but the practical outcomes of a culture that rarely views environmental degradation through a population lens.
Regional and National Grant Areas
Beyond its national focus on overpopulation, Colcom Foundation also supports regional conservation, environmental projects, and cultural assets. This dual approach reflects the understanding that local ecological health and broader population trends are connected. The foundation’s grantmaking is described as honoring the humanitarian objectives and foresight of its founder, Cordelia S. May, whose perspective on these issues preceded public awareness by decades. Read this article for additional information.
