Colcom Foundation is the result of Cordelia S. May’s efforts to impact the future of the planet during and after her lifetime. She began the organization in 1996 and then provided funding following her death in 2005. The aims and goals of the organization reflect what she believed to be essential ideas necessary to sustain life.

The impact of the Colcom Foundation is extensive and encompasses many areas. Their website lists three main components. They include carrying capacity, local environment, and local community.

Carrying capacity refers to the ability of the planet Earth to sustain a ever growing population. At some point the maximum capacity will be reached.

Local environment is centered in the 14 counties of southwestern Pennsylvania. Numerous ventures are funded and supported to improve the natural habitats of this part of the state.

Local community includes the support of projects within the same area of Pennsylvania. An example is an exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History that highlights the impact humans have on the environment. This allows the visiting public to see the real effects on the natural environment caused by humans and their activities.

The Colcom Foundation purpose is to make life better. Within the impact of carrying capacity, there are two areas of focus. One is family planning to ensure that the human population does not overtake the ability of the planet to sustain that number of humans.

The second area is immigration. The foundation supports a reasonable policy which does not overburden the ability of the United States to support unlimited people. The website points out that 88 percent of population growth in this country is due to immigration.

The Colcom Foundation supports a policy of stabilizing the population by 2040 with a gradual reduction thereafter. This is all tied into protecting the environment from the effects of too many people and not enough resources. Refer to this article for more information.
