Justin Nelson Explains the Boundaries Behind Trust
Closeness and candor do not always coexist comfortably in client relationships, but Justin Nelson believes the two must go together. The J.P. Morgan Private Bank Managing Director, who has advised clients for nearly thirty years, says setting the right professional boundaries is part of what keeps trust intact over time.
Close Enough to Disagree
“It’s important to be close enough where we can still politely criticize each other and have a discussion where you can tell someone how you feel,” Nelson explains. That balance allows him to challenge a client’s thinking without damaging the relationship, something he considers essential when managing considerable family wealth.
As head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team, Nelson oversees more than $11 billion in assets alongside a team of 20 professionals at JP Morgan. His clients, many of them leaders in hedge funds and private equity, are used to being the ones giving direction. Nelson’s role sometimes requires the opposite.
Truthful Advice Over Comfortable Silence
Clients need advisors willing to disagree with them, Justin Nelson suggests, even when the truth is not what a client wants to hear. Trust, in his framing, is less about pleasant conversations and more about believing your advisor will prioritize your interests over the comfort of the moment.
That distinction separates a transactional advisor from a genuine partner. For Justin Nelson JP Morgan, the willingness to have an honest, even uncomfortable, conversation is not a threat to the relationship. It is the maintenance that keeps decades long partnerships from quietly eroding.
Many wealthy clients are used to being deferred to in most professional settings, which can make an advisor’s candor feel unfamiliar at first. Nelson treats that discomfort as worthwhile, arguing that clients ultimately recognize when someone is telling them the truth rather than simply agreeing to keep the peace.
