Kate Robertson: Empowering Young Leaders through One Young World

In a world often marked by division and political strife, Kate Robertson, co-founder of One Young World, envisions
a future where global leaders not only wield political power but also serve as
ambassadors for the youth-driven global forum. This visionary perspective
highlights the importance of youthful idealism, innovative thinking, and
empathetic leadership in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate
change, inequality, and peace-building.

Having grown up under the oppressive regime of apartheid in South Africa, Kate Robertson understands
the transformative power of fair and just leadership. Reflecting on her
experiences, she remarks, “The leadership of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop
Desmond Tutu changed the trajectory of our nation. As a CEO and South African
citizen, I couldn’t help but wonder why, despite the numerous global forums and
gatherings, little seemed to change.”

One Young World serves as a platform where young leaders can share ideas, foster innovation,
and collaborate on solutions to global problems. Robertson believes that by
integrating these young visionaries into the highest echelons of
decision-making, positive change can occur. “I witness the passion and
dedication of these young leaders, and it inspires me. Their commitment to
their communities and their willingness to tackle seemingly insurmountable
challenges is extraordinary,” she says.

The impact of One Young World is undeniable. According to the organization’s 2022 impact
report, over 5.7 million people have been positively impacted by ambassador-led
projects. Through scholarships and initiatives like Lead2030, which funds
sustainable development goals crafted by young founders, One Young World
empowers young leaders worldwide. The report states that since 2019, over $2
million has been allocated to support the projects of 40 young leaders in 21 countries.

However, Robertson acknowledges that more needs to be done to ensure the next generation of
leaders can make a meaningful impact. “Our generation needs to help them
and get out of the way,” she asserts, echoing the sentiments of former UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Robertson believes that by empowering young
leaders and nurturing their potential, the world can transition to a more
responsible, sustainable, and equitable future.

As we face urgent global challenges, Robertson’s vision for a future where G20 leaders are also
One Young World ambassadors is a call to action. It is a reminder that true
leadership knows no age and that empowering young leaders is essential for
shaping a better world. Through One Young World, she continues to inspire and
elevate the next generation of changemakers, paving the way for a brighter and
more inclusive future. Visit this page on LinkedIn, for more information.
