Warren began a relationship with Energy Transfer Partners LP (ETP) in 2006, when ETP made him CEO. In 2015 Warren transitioned to Chairman of ETP and named his son, Jay Warren as CEO. At the time Kelcy Warren owned 28% of Energy Transfer Equity LP (the parent company), while two funds affiliated with The Blackstone Group owned another 28%. In April 2016, it was announced that Warren would step down from his role as chairman to focus on his involvement with Energy Transfer Partners LP (ETP). He remains actively involved in ETP alongside its CEO, Jeffrey W. Stevens.

According to Financial Times, Kelcy Warren was critically injured in a private plane crash on May 31, 2016 near Midlothian, Texas. He was listed in critical condition and was being treated at Baylor University Medical Center. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Meacham Airport en route to Dallas Love Field Airport.

In 2012 Kelcy Warren donated $500,000 towards the construction of the Ruth & Thomas D.) Tower Athletic Complex at Southern Methodist University. In addition he serves as chairman for the school’s board of trustees.

Kelcy Warren also donated $10 million to Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business in 2013 for business school scholarships, teaching awards and financial aid for underprivileged students. In addition, Warren was a leading donor to SMU’s $130 million capital campaign.

Among his other philanthropic endeavors, Kelcy Warren is a member of the Dallas Citizens Council and serves on its policy committee. He is also involved with The Dallas Opera and serves on the board of directors of Texas Health Resources.

Warren and Lady Bird Johnson were married on March 20, 1980. They have three children together: Jenna, Whitney and James. In 2014 Lady Bird Johnson died due to complications from a stroke she had suffered months before at age 94.
