Success Stories: One on One With Shelton Haynes
Shelton Haynes is the Chief Executive Officer and President of RIOC (Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. He has held this position on a full-time basis since March 2021. Hynes works closely with the company’s board of directors to ensure that the corporation’s objectives and goals are realized.
Shelton Haynes’ major responsibility is spearheading RIOC toward the achievement of its long-term and short-term goals. The CEO also oversees all executive and administrative functions of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation.
Under Hayne’s leadership, Roosevelt Island Corporation has experienced tremendous success and transformation. The soft-spoken CEO has overseen a lot of improvements in different parts of Roosevelt Island. These include the renovation of the Blackwell House, replacement of the seawall Railing, renovation of the Roosevelt Island Youth Center and restoration of Southpoint Park Shoreline.
What does your typical day look like?
For me, no day looks the same as another. I usually start my day at 6 A.M, take breakfast, make a few notes, respond to emails, meditate and spend time with my family.
How do you generate new ideas?
I love creating new ideas. Before assuming my current role as CEO, I worked in operations for many years. I always start by making notes and putting them into several think buckets. Besides, I also listen a lot to those surrounding me.
What one habit helps you to be productive?
Being consistent has helped me a lot as a leader. Despite the fact that life can sometimes be unpredictable, I always strive to stick to my regimen.
What trend excites you most?
I get excited when there’s progress. Seeing the work we do and how it affects the lives of people in Roosevelt Island gives me a lot of joy.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I would advise myself to set ambitions and see them as they manifest. Just like any young person, I had to identify what I wanted in life. Once I realized the power of focused goals, everything sets in motion.
What one thing do you do most of the time and recommend others to do?
Be authentic and stay true to yourself.
