Leen Kawas is a project of The Leen Kawas Education Center, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness about spiders and related arachnids and their importance in the natural world. she is a wife to David, a mother to Sabine and Salina, and a spider enthusiast. Leen Kawas was born in San Francisco, California but grew up in Sacramento, California. At the age of 12 she was bitten by a spider (she thinks it was an orb weaver) and has been fascinated by them ever since. She received her undergraduate degree at UC Davis in Biology and worked for many years in the field of marine biology (currently developing an educational curriculum for the Sacramento Unified School District). She is a passionate explorer of the natural world, which includes an enthusiasm for all creatures, big and small.
As an educator and advocate for spiders, Kawas will be sharing her passion with the world.
She was inspired by the 2013 National Geographic cover article “The Surprising Secret Life of Spiders”. This article opened her eyes to the amazing feats that are accomplished by these misunderstood creatures. After reading this article, she was elated to learn that her lifelong love of spiders could be turned into something positive.
On a mission to take the world by storm and help bring these amazing creatures into the limelight, Leen Kawas has established a foundation dedicated to all aspects of arachnology (the study of spiders and their kin). This organization came alive on June 1st, 2016 and opened its doors in Sacramento, California on January 1st, 2017
