The Role of Alliance Defending Freedom in Defending Religious Freedom in a Tolerant and Free Society

Religious freedom makes sure that everyone has the right to reflect on life’s most profound questions and to act out one’s religious beliefs in public, just as they do at in a place of worship or home. It is founded on the constitutional idea that the government should have limited authority over its people and human dignity. Such guarantees cannot be based on political or cultural popularity. A tolerant and free society necessitates that we all extend to others the same fundamental liberties that we want for ourselves. Listening to and accepting perspectives with which we strongly disagree is not always possible.

For many years, religious freedom issues in the United States were primarily concerned with defending minority religious views. Today, the government has begun to enact legislation that violates fundamental precepts of the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religion.

Alliance Defending Freedom maintains that marriage is the union of one woman and one man, as do all Abrahamic faiths. Our faith also teaches us that God created man and woman as equals and that sex is physiologically and binary determined. Fortunately, the Supreme Court has acknowledged that this marital concept is held by rational people, is based on honorable and respectable philosophical and religious underpinnings and is constitutionally protected. Sometimes we represent persons who share similar sentiments and merely want the ability to participate in society without fear of being punished by the government for their opinions or comments on these matters. Alliance Defending Freedom members’ decisions about whether to express themselves or engage in holy rituals are always based on what the message is, not on who is seeking it.

ADF was founded in 1994 by Christian community leaders initially as Alliance Defense Fund. While we have many Christian clients, we have also protected the rights of Muslims, Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, and those of no faith. Everyone has the right to practice their religion.

Alliance Defending Freedom have represented students of many religious denominations, as well as conservative, libertarian, pro-conservationist, pro-life, and other groups, in our campus free speech work.
