Wayne von Borstel Recap

Mr. Wayne von Borstel is a world-renowned marine engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He was the executive director of the Marine Engineers Institute from 2005 to 2011, where he oversaw its $8 million budget and supervised more than 600 engineers in key roles for vessels worldwide.

In 2008, Mr. von Borstel invented an energy efficient heat exchanger that he now sells through his family business, Von Borstel Heating Systems Ltd., which is based in Trail, British Columbia. The system has been installed on Vancouver’s False Creek seawall which provides the city with one third of its heating needs without any greenhouse gases or other emissions from burning fossil fuels.

In 2006 Mr. von Borstel received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for his professional and community accomplishments. He was also previously named a Paul Harris Fellow for his exceptional community service.

Mr. von Borstel has served on the boards of directors of several prominent organizations, including the British Columbia Maritime Museum Society, Vancouver Maritime Museum, Marine Emergency Duties Association and Shipowner’s Society of British Columbia. He has also sat on several national committees and working groups in marine engineering and sustainability issues with Transport Canada and Fisheries & Oceans Canada. In 2011 he was awarded the title of Honorary Captain by Transport Canada for his service to the marine industry.

In 2003 Mr. von Borstel co-founded a successful software company, Scandiweb AB, which was later sold to the NASDAQ listed company Netro Corporation in 2009.

Mr. von Borstel holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering with Distinction from the University of Western Ontario and is a graduate of MIT’s Senior Executive Program. He has received an MBA from the University of British Columbia and his DBA from Royal Roads University. Mr. von Borstel is an internationally recognized expert in heat transfer, hydrodynamics, energy efficiency and marine energy systems.
