The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) was established in 1994 by several leaders of America’s Religious Right. The group says that while it is mostly in service to members of the Christian faith, it has also intervened to defend Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, agnostics, and atheists. This is because they believe that religious freedom is for all. Alliance Defending Freedom’s main points of interest beyond religious freedom are free speech, the sanctity of human life, parental rights, and Supreme Court advocacy.

Religious Freedom

While far from the only point of interest for Alliance Defending Freedom, this is their most prolific one. They define religious freedom as the right of every person to explore the deepest questions of existence and to express those convictions in public as they would at home or in a place of worship. They feel that the courts have focused on “minority beliefs” to the detriment of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The organization believes that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that sex is biologically determined along a gender binary.

Free Speech

Alliance Defending Freedom has a Center for Academic Freedom that investigates colleges and universities and is responsible for over 400 free-speech rights cases related to students.

Sanctity of Human Life

Beyond its stances on gender expression and marriage, ADF is heavily invested in legislation protecting women, children and the unborn.

Parental Rights

Alliance Defending Freedom is one of the organizations invested in allowing parents to oversee their children’s development, health, and welfare, regularly appearing in news stories of a handful of concerned protesting specific books within public libraries.

Supreme Court Advocacy
